Melanesian people - the native population of the Melanesian islands, in 1991 their number was about 1 million. They are the result of the merging of the original dark-skinned population with the later influx of light-skinned people, arriving in Melanesia from the eastern and south-eastern Asia in three waves between the 20th and 8th centuries BC. They are culturally diverse, with many different languages (Austronesian and Papuan languages). The Melanesian economy is dominated by fisheries and, to a lesser extent, animal husbandry. The social structure is usually based on matriarchal. In traditional beliefs, the magic and the cult of ancestors play an important role.
