William James Mayo (born 29 June 1861, 28 July 1939) is an American surgeon.

In 1889 he and his brother Charles Horac founded a hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. In 1903 the hospital was transformed into the Mayo Clinic. In 1917 they founded the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research. William James Mayo was mainly engaged in abdominal surgery, especially kidney stones, malignant tumors and bowel diseases.
