Himation

Women dressed in chiton and himation

Himation - a cover worn in ancient Greece.

Himation was a rectangular piece of cloth that served as a cape. Worn by both men and women, it was applied to chiton and draped in folds. In the picture - the woman on the left is dressed in chiton, and the other two in himation imposed on the chiton.

Himation can often be found as a garb of Christ in biblical images.

Himation could also be worn alone, without a chiton; It was called achiton.

In addition to the full costume consisting of chiton and himation, there was often a long stick with a knob. It was used to resist the heath. Bibliography
