League of Armed Neutrality
League of Armed Neutrality - an organization formed in 1780 to defend the signatory states against the British continental blockade.
In 1780, Denmark, Sweden and Russia formed the League of Neutrality, a few months later the Prussia joined the League. The first part of the League was the Russian-Danish Convention on 28 June / 9 July 1780. The next Convention of 21 July / 1 August 1780 was signed by Swedish Ambassador Johan Fredrik von Nolcken and Russian Chancellor Ivan Ostermann in St Petersburg.
The league then joined the Netherlands (from December 1780 at the time of the war with the British), and in the years 1781-1782; Kingdom of Prussia, Austria, Portugal and the Kingdom of Naples.
The league collapsed as a result of the battle of Copenhagen and the death of Russian ruler Paul I in 1801. Bibliography
