Microbiological loop

Microbiological loop

Microbial loop (microbial loop) - microbiological circulation of matter; a pathway in the pelagic cycle of matter that runs from the release of dissolved organic matter (DOC), mainly by phytoplankton, by the bacterium and bacteriocerous protozoa, to the consumption of bacteria and protozoa by plankton and zooplankton.

In this process, dissolved organic matter (DOC) is not mineralized and is re-incorporated into the trophic network. Bacterioplankton, next to detritus, is consumed by zooplankton. Many species of planktonic bacteria are too small and can only be eaten by small organisms, including protozoa (including flagellates), and these are only eaten by larger zooplankton organisms. In this way, the energy from the microbiological circulation is incorporated into the classical grazing chain.

The phenomenon of microbiological loop is also present in running water ( river continuum). Bibliography
