Tropical spastic paraparesis


Tropical spastic paraparesis (TSP) - an infectious disease of the central nervous system, manifested by chronic myelopathy. The etiology of the disease is HTLV-1, but pathogenesis is unclear; postulate of autoimmune processes. Tropical spastic paraparesis occurs endemically in India, Africa and the Caribbean. Symptoms of TSP include paraesthesia, limb pain, muscle weakness, especially in the arms. Sometimes there is urinary incontinence. The diagnosis is based on the finding of a characteristic clinical picture and evidence of the presence of anti-HTLV-1 antibodies in cerebrospinal fluid. Bibliography
