Clay refractory

Refractory clay - claystone sedimentary rocks from light gray to brownish, sometimes reddish.

Its main ingredient is kaolinite, besides it contains illite, quartz, rutile and charred plant remains. Good quality refractory clay is characterized by plasticity. By the pressure of the overlying layers, the rock hardens and passes through the refractory shale. In Poland it is found in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains, in Lower Silesia and in the vicinity of Cracow.

Used as a raw material in the manufacture of refractory materials in the ceramic industry, in the chemical, paper and rubber industries. It is also used as a cleansing agent, for example for water purification, oil. Refractory bricks are used for making bricks or tiles placed in eg furnaces, fireplaces, chimneys. Typically, the materials produced can withstand temperatures up to 1650 ° C, with a high resistance to 1775 ° C.
