Jagunço
Jagunço - the name used to describe the members of paramilitary troops in northeastern Brazil in the nineteenth century. Later, the term also refers to a bandit.
The phenomenon was widespread especially in the sertao wastes, where the official, legal system of power and structure of the state rarely functioned efficiently. The local landlords formed units to protect their possessions, take part in quarrels with their neighbors, and watch over slaves and then free workers. You could rent a jaguna, they were not always associated with one property.
The term was also used as a pejorative term for people taking part in the so- Canudos War (Guerra de Canudos). Between 1896 and 1897, dozens of thousands of people protested against the republic around the self-proclaimed mystic Antônio Conselheiro. The socio-religious movement was suppressed by the troops.
