Chapel at Pedra de Lume Salina in the crater of the volcano

Pedra de Lume is a small town on the east coast of the island of Sal in Cape Verde. The village is home to around 300 people today.

It is located about 5 kilometers east of the capital of Espargos. In the nineteenth century, the village developed around the existing saline, located inside the crater of the volcano. Salt was mined until the 1980s. At present salinas are a great tourist attraction due to the ponds with high density of salt in the interior of the crater with therapeutic properties. Remnants of old industrial and port infrastructure also survived. Due to the unfavorable climate nearby, there is no crop.
