Hans Christian Gram


Hans Christian Joachim Gram (born 13 September 1853 in Copenhagen, died 14 November 1938) is a Danish bacteriologist, pathologist.

He studied botany at the University of Copenhagen. He was assistant to the botanist of the zoologist Japetus Steenstrup. He was acquainted with the fundamentals of pharmacology and the use of a microscope.

Between 1878 and 1883 he studied medicine. In 1884, he discovered in Berlin a method of experimentally differentiating bacteria into two large groups due to differences in cell wall construction. This technique - Gram method, is a standard technique of medical microbiology. In 1922 he described the method of determining the amount of fibrin in the blood and plasma.

In 1891 Gram was a lecturer in pharmacology at the University of Copenhagen. In 1901 he received a pharmacology department and became a professor of medicine. Authoritative control (person):
