neo-expressionism
Neo Expressionism, also New Expressionism, New Expression - a trend in contemporary art, whose origins can be traced back to the late 1960s, is flourishing in the 1980s.
Created in contrast to fashionable minimalism, conceptualism and geometric abstraction. Neo expressions are characterized by expressing feelings, using emotions, expressions, and intuition. Images are often collage forms, painted with expressive, strong, and sometimes seemingly careless brush strokes. They present a lively, aggressive and personal vision of the world, expressing spontaneous feelings rather than specific ideas.
Georg Baselitz, Anselm Kiefer and A. Penck, Sandro Chia, Francesco Clemente, Julian Schnabel and Susan Rothenberg were the precursors of the movement. Neoexpressionism was based on the activity of the German group Neue Wilde (New Dziady), operating within the trans-angels.
In Poland, the main figures of this current include: Zygmunt Magner, Krzysztof Skarbek, Grupa Gruppa, Circle of Clips, LuXuS, Jerzy Kosałka, Paweł Jarodzki, Zdzisław Nitka, Jerzy Świątkowski, Cezary Staniszewski, Janusz Mulak, Michał Kowalski, Grzegorz Smigielski, Ludwik Konarzewski (junior) Bibliography
