Takrur - one of the smaller states of West Africa in the Iron Age, which flourished around the same time as the Ghana Empire. Located in the Senegalese valleys, along the present border of Senegal and Mauritania, was a trading center where gold from the Bambuk region was sold, salt from Awlil, Sahel grain and slaves from the south. Takrur took Islam in the 11th century before Ghanah and during Labi's reign (he died in 1040/41), the first ruler who went to Islam, fought on the Berber side of the Almoravids in the war against the Ghana Empire. As early followers of Islam, the Takrur people played an important role in introducing this religion to Western Africa. Eventually Takrur was absorbed by the states of Djokov and Songhaj.
