Workers gymnastics and sports federation in Poland

Arbeiter Turn- und Sportbund in Polen - German association of sports societies operating in the interwar period in Poland (this was stated in the statute, but practically focused on the Polish Upper Silesia). Its purpose was to support workers' sport.

Tradition was related to the pre-war period - the first Arbeiter-Turnverein (Workers' Gymnastics Association) in Upper Silesia was established in 1906 in the Royal Hut and in 1907 in Bielsko.

The union suffered financial problems, although it was supported by the German trade unions and the Deutsche Sozialistische Arbeiterpartei Polens. Sports scores played a minor role (mainly about integrating workers and cultural and physical development). In 1931, the union delegation took part in the Vienna workers' Olympics.

The Association consisted of 5 gymnastic and sports associations, with 2 thousand members (1932). The most powerful was the "Freie Turner" workers' union at the Royal Hut, headed by Karl Buchwald. Equally active was the company Arbeiter Turn- und Sportverein "Vorwärts" from Bielsko.

The president of the Union was Josef Jant (1932), and the leading activists Stanisław Rochowiak and Erwin Kasper. Bibliography
