Ajahn Viradhammo
Ajahn Viradhammo - a Theravada Buddhist monk, son of Latvian refugees, was born in 1947 in Esslingen am Neckar, Germany. When he was five, his family moved to Toronto, Canada. He studied engineering at the University of Toronto, but academic life disappointed him so in 1969 he stopped studying and left for work in Germany. Later, when he lived in India, he encountered Buddhism, meeting the venerable Samaner Bodhesako, who introduced him to the writings of the revered Nanavira Thera. Eventually, he went to Thailand to become a samanera at Wat Mahathat. The monk (bhikkhu) was ordained in 1974, at Wat Pah Pong. He was one of the first inhabitants of Wat Pah Nanachat.
In 1977, after four years in Thailand, he returned to Canada and later to Germany to meet his family. He did not return to Thailand because he was asked by Ajahn Chaha to join Ajahn Sumedo at Hampstead Vihara in London. He continued to build monasteries in Chithurst and Harnham. In 1985, at the invitation of the Wellington Theravada Buddhist Association, he accompanied the venerable Thanavarodo to New Zealand, where he lived for 10 years and founded the Bodhinyanarama Monastery.
In 1995 he came to Britain to help Ajahn Sumedho lead the Amaravati monastery. He stayed there for four years before returning to New Zealand, where he lives permanently. He is currently involved in the creation of the Tisarana Buddhist Monastery in eastern Canada.
