Othon Friesz


Othon Friesz (born 6 February 1879, died 10 January 1949) is a French painter associated with Impressionism and Fauvism. He created portraits, acts, landscapes, city views and cardboard boxes for tapestries.

Born in Le Havre, Normandy, where in 1895-1896 he studied at the local art school. In 1897, with his friend Raoul Dufa, he went to Paris to study. Henri Matisse and Albert Marquet. Like them, he rebelled against the academic school of Lon Bonnat and joined the fowkers. In 1907 he returned to Normandy, where in 1912 he founded his own studio. He participated in the First World War. From 1919 he lived in Paris for the rest of his life. During this period, he turned his attention to realism. During the Second World War he was associated with the collaborative organization Collaboration Group, guided by its subsection of visual arts. He was buried at the Montparnasse Cemetery in Paris.
