Stefan III (Prince of Naples)
Stefan III (? - died 832) was Prince of Naples 821-832.
He ruled during an important transitional period in the history of the duchy. At the end of his reign, Naples became independent. The duchy was not inherited in 818 when the patricians of Sicily chose the prince without the emperor's approval. They did it again in 821, but the ruler was expelled from the city in favor of the elected Stefan III. Stefan first started to hit coins with his own initials instead of the Byzantine Emperor. He was not associated with the empire either by appointment or by other ties except the succession of the duchy.
