Masking (psychoacoustics)

Masking (psychoacoustics) - a phenomenon that occurs in the auditory system by increasing the detection threshold of the masked signal as a result of the presence of another signal - the mask. There is a distinction between simultaneous masking when a mask is present together with a masked signal, and non-simultaneous masking when a masker occurs directly before or immediately after a masked signal. The masking phenomenon is closely related to the adaptation of the hearing system.

Knowledge of signal masking is used in perceptual coding. In addition, masking is one of the basic elements of the psychoacoustic model used for, among other things, audio compression and speech recognition systems.
