Thomas Cavendish

Thomas Cavendish (born 1555, died 1592) is an English sailor and corsair. Thomas Cavendish served under the orders of Queen Elizabeth I. He participated in the Corsica War between England and Spain and Portugal, which was in the war between 1496 and 1604. In 1585 he set sail for the first Corsair cruise to the shores of India, and a year later, on three galleys and 123 men, on a cruise around the world. On the way he attacked Spanish settlements and ships along the coast of South America, from Patagonia to Mexico. When he reached the Pacific, he headed for the Philippines, Molokai and Java. In 1588 he returned to England on one of the Desire ships and with the spoils.

In 1591 he set sail for the next five Pacific galleys. In winter he reached the Strait of Magellan, where, due to the storm, his ship Leicester had to turn and sink near Saint Helena. Thomas Cavendish was killed, and soon all ships except one (Desire) sank. Bibliography Authoritative control (person):
