Simba Makoni


Simba Makoni (born March 11, 1950), Zimbabwean politician, former Minister of Finance and Economic Development. Candidate in presidential elections in March 2008. He is a member of the ZANU-PF party. Curriculum vitae

Makoni initially studied chemistry at the University of Rhodesia, but his opposition to Ian Smith's government was removed from the university. He went to Great Britain where he continued his studies at De Montfort University in Leicester and the University of Leeds, earning his doctorate. Makoni joined the ZANU (African Zimbabwean Union of Zimbabwean African National Union), which fought the Smith regime. From 1977 to 1998 she was a representative in Western Europe.

After Zimbabwe gained independence in 1980, he returned to the country and was elected a member of parliament. He held various positions in the administration of President Robert Mugabe. In 1980 he became Deputy Minister of Agriculture, then Minister of Energy and Industry and Minister of Sport and Culture.

Makoni was also the Secretary General of the South African Development Community (SADC). On July 15, 2000, he became Minister of Finance and Economic Development. He was dismissed on August 25, 2002 after a conflict with President Mugabe. As a minister forcing, against the president, a plan to devalue the Zimbabwean dollar.

In 2003, he successfully applied for the position of President of the African Development Bank. On February 5, 2008 at a press conference in Harare, Simba Makoni announced his intention to start the presidential election on March 29, 2008. He said he would run for president as a candidate for the presidential and ruling ZANU-PF party, which is still a member, although Robert Mugabe himself is the party's candidate. Nevertheless, he did not exclude the start as an independent candidate.
