The Nowa Huta Cross - a Latin cross located in the Teatralny estate, was for many years one of the most recognizable symbols of Nowa Huta.

The wooden cross was placed on March 17, 1957, in the square where the first church in Nowa Huta was to be built, planned for the construction of a new town. At the crossroads of the then Marksa and Majakowski streets, the apostolic administrator of the Cracow diocese was bishop Eugeniusz Baziak. However, the communist authorities did not keep the promise of building the church and decided to build a school there. The permit was withdrawn and the cross was ordered to be removed. On April 27, 1960 excavators entered the square to dig a cross. There were riots and fights between the militia and the inhabitants who defended the cross. Thanks to the attitude of the newlyweds the cross remained in place. It was built next to the school and the church was built there in 2001.

Thanks to the efforts of the then Metropolitan of Cardinal Cardinal. Karol Wojtyla started the construction of the first Nowa Huta church in October 1967, it was the Ark of the Lord, but already in another place, several hundred meters away.

The wooden cross was destroyed, replaced by metal (second), and again on wooden (third), which today stands elsewhere.

Today, at the site of the church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus stands a memorial to the Nowa Huta Cross. It was unveiled and devoted on Saturday, November 10, 2007. It was designed by Stefan Dousa. It is made of bronze and has a height of 4.85 m. There are important words from the homily of John Paul II, which he delivered in Mogile in 1979. "From the cross in Nowa Huta a new evangelization began, evangelization of the new millennium." There are also carved in bronze. As Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz said, the hands of those who never gave back to the Cross were not wanted.

The cross itself (third) was moved and now stands at the north-eastern wall of the church, from the side of the os. They were climbing, and the original (first) cross was placed on the anchor of the Ark of the Lord from the field altar (places of riots).
