Junior High School Witold the Great in Vilnius
Gimnazjum im. Witold Wielki in Vilnius (Vilniaus Vytauto Didžiojo gimnazija) - one of two secondary schools with Lithuanian language teaching located in the Vilnius region during the Second Polish Republic.
HistoryMykolas Biržiška became the school's first director, then Marcelinas Šikšnys. In the school year 1938/1939 29 teachers (20 Lithuanians and 6 Poles) worked in the grammar school. One of the well-known pedagogues was Jurgis Šlapelis. During the 2nd half of the school year, 420 abiturient students were admitted to the school.
Witold Wielki was one of two high school Lithuanian high schools in Poland during the interwar period.
Initially, the junior high school was housed in the building of the latter secondary school. Joachim Lelewel, however, as a result of the occupation by the Polish troops of the Vilnius region in October 1920 he was evicted and transferred to another building.
In 1925, for the first time, the matriculation examinations were held at the school, led by Stanisław Kościałkowski. Most subjects (except Polish, political science, history and geography of the Republic of Poland) were given in Lithuanian. Bibliography
