Kismet in Cog

Kismet and Cog - Robot names designed and created by artificial intelligence specialists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology lab. History of research

MIT was founded in 1961 by John McCarthy and together with the AI lab at Carnegie Mellon University are the most important centers in AI research in the world.

Robots: Kismet and Cog are considered to be one of MIT's greatest accomplishments. Appearance of robots and their functions Cog is a younger brother of Kismet, so Kismet's experience in building Kismet is used to design the Cog, which will complete all basic senses as well as manipulators. For now, designers are particularly looking at Kismet's behavior. This robot consists of a head weighing 3.5 kg with the face of Gremlin, which informs about the mood and needs of the robot. At the start the robot was equipped with the most basic needs, just like the baby. If he is hungry he cries, if he does not want anything around him, he wants stimulation. In addition, the robot can move his mouth and eyebrows, his emotions can be seen on the mimic of his face. And it's all thanks to the built-in incentive system.

Kismet's success allowed him to transfer his core programs to Coga, who, unlike his older brother, was able to react to his surroundings. Its software now allows for reactions similar to those seen in a 2 year old child. So AI professionals had to turn to nurses for the project. Cog must learn everything by having only the most needed programs.

The creators enjoy the fact that when they look at his movements he feels like he is behaving like a child who knows the world. For the creation of a being that learns as a human being was the main premise of the project. Cog is able to find, with high resolution cameras, the face and eyes of man and stare at them. The only problem in this project is the unsolved problem of internally controlled memory and the attention that would mimic the storage of information by humans. Such a memory would have to distinguish the order of events in the past, store information in the form of hierarchies, etc. Without such memory Cog is deprived of "inner life", at least for today.
