Carche

El Carche [kaɾʃə] is an area in the northern part of the Autonomous Community of Murcia, at the border with the Valencian Community, comprising parts of the Yecla (Iecla), Jumilla (Jumella) and Abanilla cat. Favanella). The name is derived from the mountainous Sierra del Carche (Cat. Serra del Carxe) lying in it.

Carche is characterized by a large percentage of the Catalan-speaking population (using the Valencian dialect). For this reason, it is sometimes referred to as the Catalan countries, and in any case to the Catalan-speaking territories. The Catalan-speaking population is not autochthonous, they are 19th-century settlers from Valencia. Since the Middle Ages most of the population was Morys, exiled by Spaniards in the 17th century, which led to the temporary depopulation of the region.

Since the mid-twentieth century, following the agricultural crisis, the area has been depopulated. At the end of the 20th century it was inhabited by several hundred people.
