Oliver Winchester
Oliver Fischer Winchester (born November 30, 1810 in Boston, New York, USA, December 11, 1880) is an American builder and industrialist. He produced the first fully successful repetitive rifle, and in 1857 founded a factory producing weapons and ammunition in New Haven.
In 1855 he acquired a firearm when he bought an eighth stake in the Volcanic Repeating Firearms Company and organized the production of the weapons under the patents of H. Smith and D.B. Wesson. In 1857 the company went bankrupt. Oliver Winchester bought her shares in full, then set up a new company called the New Haven Arms Company, which he became president. In 1858 Winchester hired T.B. Henry, who in 1860 developed the Henry M1860 rifle. The weapon was very successful. In 1866 Winchester reorganized the company, which was named Winchester Repeating Arms Company. From then on all the weapons produced by the company were called Winchester. The first rifle that Winchester developed was the M1866, produced in 30,000 units, followed by the 1873 rifle M1873. Associated with the Democratic Party, she was the deputy governor of Connecticut (1866-1867). In 1834 he married Jane Ellen Hope, with whom he had three children.
