In the late Middle Ages, the fortress belonged to the Cholokashvili feudal family. For a long time it was empty. The fortress of the city was destroyed by grave damage, and was often repaired, it is one of the best preserved monuments of Georgian architecture. It is at least 1500 years old.

The city-fortress consists of two parts: a fortress on a plateau of rocky hills and a town on a slope. The buildings were surrounded by a defensive wall with nine quadrangular towers. Royal Palace - a two-storey building with a treasury - was located in the eastern part of the fort. In the middle part was the Church of the Holy Cross (Jardin Patiosani).

There are currently renovations of the fort.
