Francis Narwojsz


Franciszek Narwojsz (born 1742 - died in 1819) - Lithuanian Jesuit, mathematician, engineer.

In 1756 he joined the Jesuit College. After graduating, he went to Vilnius, where he took up a job at the University, taking up the chair of higher mathematics. He was not dedicated solely to this field; He received the titles of Doctor of Philosophy and Doctor of Theology. Due to the conflict with the superiors, however, he had to leave the university after some time. He was sent to Nesvizhme, where he also taught mathematics. There was a cassock of the Order. At that time, following the advice of Antoni Tyzenhauz, he was responsible for the engineering of the Nemunas for three years on behalf of the Lithuanian Tax Commission. Thanks to this project he gained great fame. Hydrology was interested in and in later years.

The proposal to return to Vilnius University was rejected by joining the service of Tyzenhauz. He has run his numerous business interests in Western European countries, staying abroad for a total of five years. On his return, in 1783 he received the chair of higher mathematics at the University of Vilnius and the dignity of the Vilnius Canon. This dignity was until death. He was buried at the Bernardine Cemetery in Zarzecze, Vilnius.
