Free Earth Party

Free Soil Party - An American political party set up by abolitionists in August 1848 at the Buffalo Convention.

Its members, called freesoilers, opposed extending slavery to areas joined to the United States after the war with Mexico. The members' motives were different, some were fighting slavery for humanitarian reasons, others had seen competition for free farmers in this institution.

The party ended its activities in 1854 and was absorbed by the Republican Party. Bibliography
