G-quadruplex (G4-DNA) - a sequence of polynucleotides that forms a specific guanidine tetrad structure stabilized by Hoogsteen hydrogen bonds. G4-DNA is further stabilized by the usual potassium cation. They can be molded with DNA, RNA, LNA or PNA. Hybrid quadruplets are also possible, for example containing both DNA and RNA. G-quaternals can be formed from one, two or four strands of polynucleotides.
In genomic DNA, quadruplex sequences occur, inter alia, in telomeres and regulator sites.
