Overtime service

Service overtime - in Poland one of the forms of non-military service. This form was used both in the Polish Army during the interwar period and after the Second World War. It was legally abolished on January 1, 2010.

Its principles are described in art. 86 of the Law on universal military duty (Journal of Laws of 2017, item 1430).

One-to-seven-year ministry service may voluntarily apply to any service soldier who, in accordance with the law, has fulfilled all of the following conditions:

The overtime service was paid in exchange for a salary appropriate to the degree of military and occupied position while retaining the right to rest and holiday. Admission to such service was equivalent to the conclusion of a contract by a soldier with an army obliging him to serve in a military service for a fixed period of time.

The concept of ministry service in the army is also used in other armies than in Poland, but depending on the provisions in force there may be completely different rules. In particular, in the United States, for example, a stop-loss policy is in force, allowing the military to extend a soldier's term of service beyond the contract he signed, even against his will.
