STAR (Standard Terminal Arrival Route) - published inbound flight procedure. The purpose of the STAR procedure is to regulate the flow of air traffic in the TMA (air traffic area) - all planes follow a given route, at a specified speed and with specific altitudes.
This procedure significantly simplifies the operation of the controller in high traffic. The controller does not have to provide courses for "driving" the aircraft, just give the pilot how to perform the procedure. This allows the controller to move attention to another plane, which de facto relieves the control service - it does not require continuous operation of the aircraft, so the ability to drive more operations increases.
