Software bloat - Negative definition of a certain type of software. It represents a program that has a disproportionate need for system resources (processor power, RAM, and persistent memory) relative to its capabilities. Often, this program runs slower on a computer with more computing power than its older counterparts on less efficient hardware while offering comparable capabilities.

The tendency for such programs to emerge was due to an increase in the number and quality of personal computers in the late twentieth century. This was due to a decrease in hardware costs, a relatively high cost of development work and increased demand.

Bloatware is also customary for any software pre-installed on new computers by retailers and IT departments that a computer user does not need - such software only consumes computer resources without providing any special value.
