The Human Proteome Organization (HUPO) is a consortium of governmental, non-governmental, academic and commercial institutions involved in proteomics research. HUPO's mission is to get to know the human proteom, to describe all human proteins, and to coordinate and promote proteomics around the world.
Works
HUPO has similar goals as the Human Genome Project (HUGO), but because of the structure, origin and complexity of the protein function, it is a harder task and requires more work. Proteom has a dynamic character, and its expression is dependent on many physiological, pathological, and environmental factors. There is also a post-translational modification of proteins. The workload associated with knowing the human proteome is many times greater, forcing the coordination and cooperation of many institutions on a broader scale.
