Stuart Lewis-Evans
Stuart Lewis-Evans (born 20 April 1930 in Luton, died 25 October 1958 in East Grinstead) is a British racing driver. Career He started his Formula One career in Formula One in 1957 at the Monaco Grand Prix where he made a sensational fourth at the wheel of the Connaught car. This performance drew the attention of Tony Vandervell, Vanwall's manager, who pulled the young driver into his crew.
During the Grand Prix, Pescara Lewis-Evans was fifth, while in the 1957 Italian Grand Prix Monza won the pole position, but the race was not completed. In the final classification of the season he was ranked twelfth.
In the 1958 season, Vanwall's third driver, alongside champion champions Stirling Moss and Tony Brooks. While both sides of the team won six victories, Lewis-Evans had to settle for two thirds (Belgian Grand Prix and Portugal). He added a pole position to the Netherlands. He finished ninth in the final classification.
During the last race of the season, the Moroccan Grand Prix at Ain-Diab, Lewis-Evans scored a serious accident caused by engine failure. The car hit the barrier and stood in flames. A heavily burned driver was transported to the UK but died in hospital six days later as a result of his injuries.
Lewis-Evans's death was one of the main reasons for the withdrawal of Vanwall's Formula 1 team. Bibliography
