Daniel de La Touche de La Ravardiere - French general of Guyana, French meridian creator. Curriculum vitae
The title of General was received in 1602 by Henry IV. From 1584, Guyana was in possession of the Berrio family. In 1604, Touche founded the French fort of Cayenne, and in 1612, after fighting with the local Indians, moved to the Portuguese island of Maranhao. There he founded the fort of Saint-Louis du Maranhao (São Luís) and the adjacent area was named France Equinoxiale. Fort became Touche's base for exploration expeditions. In 1616 the Portuguese governor of Brazil sent to Maranhao a military commanded by Francis Caldeira. The Portuguese defeated the French and forced them to leave the island. The future of Daniel de la Touche is unknown.
Touche's French colonization was continued in the following years. In 1643 Charles Poetto de Bretigny was born in France, France as a France equinoxiale de la Guyane. Over the next hundred years, these territories have been handed over and divided between France, the Netherlands and England. Finally, in 1760 Guyana was divided between these countries. Bibliography
