Transfer Smolena

Smolen transfers - a bridge convention developed by American conductor Michael Smolen.

Smolen's transfer is based on the fact that when you open a 1Nb partner, with a hand containing 5-4 in senior colors and with a guaranteed payout, we bid 2 ♣ Stayman, and after a possible answer 2 ♦ (showing no four-card senior), we bid on level three color four. Such bidding always sets the final contract with the partner's hand. The same convention can be used in 6-4, then after 3N, we bid on the sixth color.

Smolen's transfer can also be used in double-sided bidding, such as when Stayman checks his opponent on the left and the partner and opponent on the right after the match fold.
