William Higinbotham


William Higinbotham (born October 25, 1910 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, November 10, 1994 in Gainesville, Georgia) is an American physicist, computer game developer for Tennis for Two.

Higinbotham began his scientific career taking part in the production of the atomic bomb in the Manhattan project. In 1947 he began work at the newly established Brookhaven National Laboratory, where he worked until 1984. In 1958 he published a tennis computer game, Tennis for Two, a simulation of table tennis visualized using an oscilloscope. Although the original was not retained, it was considered the first computer game ever. Higinbotham did not flaunt his work and it was not until 1983 that he was honored as the father of video games by journalist David Ahl. Authoritative control (person):
