Rhynie Chert
Rock sample from Rhyne Chert from Harvard University collection
Rhynie Chert - a paleontological position of the Konservat-Lagerstätten type containing plant and animal fossils of one of the oldest land ecosystems from early Devonian (about 400 million years ago). The site is located north of the village of Rhynie (Aberdeenshire, Scotland). It was discovered in 1912 by local doctor Dr Mackie. Fossils are preserved in siliceous fissures, formed near hot springs and geysers. As a result of the silica fossilization, the microstructure of the soft parts (plants with preserved cell structure, even with stomata) are very well preserved.
The Rhyne Chert fossil collection includes about 60 taxa of flora and fauna:
and arthropods: wije (Crussolum, Leverhulmia) eutykarcinoidy (Heterocrania) The oldest known wingless insects - Rhyniella praecursor jumpers.
