XPA - A human protein encoded by the XPA gene at locus 9q22.3, involved in the nucleotide repair (NER) repair process. The XPA gene encodes a 273 amino acid polypeptide chain and an estimated 31 kDa cellular mass. Human protein exhibits 95% homology with a murine counterpart and contains many α-helis and zinc finger motif as other DNA binding proteins. The XPA genre contains six exons. XPA protein binds to ERCC1 protein. It was found that the function of the XPA protein is to bind the ERCC1 protein-cutting complex and recruit it to the DNA damage site, which is an essential part of the NER repair mechanism. The mutations in the XPA gene are responsible for one of the xeroderma pigmentosum (Type A or Type I, OMIM * 611153).
