He was born into a family court clerk. He studied at the Academic Gymnasium in Lviv, a Ukrainian grammar school in Przemysl, studied at the Catholic University of Lublin, the Poznan University of Commerce, the Academy of Commerce in Berlin.
During his studies he worked in the student organization "Molom Hromada", then joined the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists. In 1933 he was arrested for his activities in the CNS, convicted, spent three years in the Polish prison. During the Second World War he was involved in organizational activities in the CNS and was arrested by the German authorities and sent to the concentration camp Sachsenhausen. In 1946, after graduating from the Law Faculty of the Free Ukrainian University in Prague, he married Tatiana Terłecka, a well known neuropathologist at the University of Vienna.
In 1950, they moved with their wife permanently to Washington. In 1980, they founded the Tatyana Foundation and the Omelan Antonovich Foundation to support the development of Ukrainian literary studies, literary critique, history, art history, linguistics and politics.
