Falls of the Ohio
The Falls of the Ohio was the only major hurdle in Ohio River shipping in the early days of settling in today's United States west of the Appalachians. "Waterfalls" are actually a series of porosities formed by the relatively late erosion caused by a river flowing from the hard limestone rocks created during the Devonian period 386 million years ago. In 1990, the Falls of the Ohio State Park was part of a section of the Indiana River.
