Oxini Bokini

Ovini Bokini (born November 3, 1944, January 15, 2009) is a Fijian politician.

In the 1990s he was a member of parliament and a minister of several ministries. On July 21, 2004, he chaired the Grand Council of Chieftains, after the previous chairman of the board, Ratu Epeli Ganilau, stepped down in an atmosphere of political turmoil. Ganilau has previously requested a voluntary resignation from the post of Judge for betrayal and participation in the 2000 revolt of Vice President Ratu Jope Senilola.

In August 2004, Senilola was sentenced to four years in prison, and after his sentence became valid in November of that year he resigned as vice president. The political significance of Bokini has thus increased. In accordance with the Constitution of Fiji, in the event of the President's inability to perform his duties, his role is taken over by the Vice-President; In 2004, 83-year-old Josef Iloilo, who has been suffering from Parkinson's disease for some years, was the president of Fiji. In a vacancy situation at the vice president's office, Fijian constitutionalists attribute his role to the chairman of the Great Council of Chieftains. Doubts over the possible replacement of President Iloilo resolved in mid-December 2004 the appointment of new Vice-President Joni Madrasi.

In July 2005, Bokini was elected chairman of the Great Council of Chieftains for the next term of office, but by mid-April the following year, due to the critical attitude towards the military coup, he was pushed aside by interim Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama.
