Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances


RTECS contains information on irritation, mutagenic effects, effects on offspring, carcinogenicity, acute toxicity, chronic toxicity. LD50, LC50, TDLo, TCLo and animal studies are available in the scientific literature. Each substance has a unique registry number assigned to it.

The database was created in 1970 on the basis of the US Occupational Safety and Health Act. Until 2001 the database was maintained by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and was free. In 2001, the Elsevier MDL private equity firm took over and became a paid company.

The current base is managed by Accelrys and is available by subscription in English, French and Spanish. In 2011, the data included ca. and about 2 thousand. entries.
