Awienus - actually Rufus Festus Avienus (4th century n.e.), Roman geographer, aristocrat and poet. He was probably the proconsul of Africa (366) and Achaii (372). He was a pagan, attached to the traditional Roman religion. He is known as the author of The first known description of the coast of Western Europe is the Maritima Ora, or "Sea shore". There is a part of the first book, describing the coast of Britain, France and Spain. He also translated the Orbis terrae descriptio, or "Description of the Earth," from the Greek work of Dionysius Periegeta. Authoritative control (person):
